“John, Paul, George and Ringo … This was taken at the bottom of the Thien Mu Pagoda in Huế, Vietnam. As beautiful as the ancient sites are, I was bored with shots of temples and ruins. Luckily, this fab four wandered past to bring a smile to my face”. (Photo by Victoria Thake/The Guardian)

“Portrait of Henry Chiyumba, 91. I met Henry on a recent trip to Uganda to photograph for a medical NGO. He was just leaving the hospital and was dressed with such style that I felt compelled to chat and asked to take his portrait. He told me he was a professional football player when he was young”. Runner-up. “Dubrovnik old town just after an epic storm. The waves were crashing against the sea walls, and this particular wave caught us all by surprise. I had my phone out and managed to capture this shot before making a hasty retreat”. MICK RYAN, JUDGE: “Some photographers call this a grab shot, a rather demeaning term. I call it seizing the moment, and while not everything is perfect, the overall effect is dramatic”. (Photo by Adrian Travis/The Guardian)

Winner. “Hikers at sunrise in the Great Sand Dunes national park, Colorado. To give an idea of scale, this photo was taken with a 500mm lens”. MICK RYAN, JUDGE: “Beautiful strong lines, the simplicity of monotone and figures to add scale. This elevated composition of the desert is this month’s worthy winner”. Runner-up. “The City of London, looking towards the Royal Exchange and the Bank of England. The ever-changing London skyline provides many excellent opportunities for cityscape photography, none more exciting than the ebb and flow of traffic at night”. MICK RYAN, JUDGE: “Sophisticated new camera sensors, sharp lenses and the ability to take hundreds of shots in a session and check your work have made night photography much easier than it ever used to be. The results, like this scene, can be spectacular”. (Photo by Mark Caldon/The Guardian)
